THE SHORT VERSION
Audacity is free, open-source recording and editing software. Your own narration can be a useful companion to AI visuals, without adding a paid voice-generation subscription.
Audacity describes its core recording and editing software as free and open source. It can help you add your own narration to AI-assisted visuals. This workflow uses ordinary recording; it does not require an AI voice generator or claim that optional plugins are free. We have not recorded or evaluated a sample for this article.
Start with the microphone you have
Read a short part of the script aloud before buying equipment. You may find that the first problem is a noisy room, an awkward sentence or a microphone too far from your mouth.
Download only through the official Audacity site. Its optional companion services and third-party plugins are separate from this exercise. Follow the microphone setup guide to connect your microphone and select the recording device. Hardware compatibility still depends on your computer and microphone.
Record a short test first
Our proposed practice task is a 20-second explanation of one useful feature in a video you are making. Write it as something you would say to a colleague. Mark any product names or technical terms that need a deliberate pronunciation.
Record the opening sentence and listen back through headphones. Check that you selected the intended microphone and can hear every word comfortably. Try reducing room noise or changing your distance before attempting to fix the entire recording with effects.
Keep a note of what changed between samples. A good comparison uses the same sentence and similar speaking volume.
Make the edit sound like a person
Record complete sentences so you have room to make natural cuts. Keep the original take and edit a working copy. Remove mistakes and distracting pauses while listening for abrupt changes in rhythm. An audible breath may be preferable to an unnatural jump between words.
Play the narration alongside the visuals. If a sentence needs to describe three separate actions in a few seconds, simplify the script or give the shot more time. Faster speech is not always the most useful fix.
Check the exported audio
Export a file suitable for your video editor, then listen to that file from beginning to end. Confirm that the opening and final words are complete and that the volume remains comfortable across cuts.
Audacity does not turn a poor recording into a verified production result by itself. This guide has no measured noise-removal or quality claims. If you need a synthetic voice for a specific reason, our AI voiceover workflow covers the decisions to make first. For this exercise, finishing with your own voice is a complete result.
